"We're building the next operating system for personal finance."
Hwan Kim, Chief Product Officer, Questrade Financial Group
Last Thursday, around 60 senior engineers, designers, and product leaders joined us at Model Citizen in Calgary for a private evening with three of the people leading Questrade's next chapter: Hwan Kim (Chief Product Officer, Questrade Financial Group), Andrej Simeonov (Head of Technology, QT Experience Platform) and Ralph Sadowski (Product Director). We had a great chat about Questrade's story, in three parts:
The Past: where it came from
The Present: It’s recent inflection point
The Future: Where it's headed
This is Tech Thursday’s recap of the story.
You can watch the whole panel on Youtube here, or listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
Upcoming Tech Thursday Events:

👨💻 November 14th - Hackathon: Tech Thursday x Garmin
Co-hosted by: Garmin Canada
We're bringing back the spirit of early-2010s hackathons: developers, product managers, and innovators together for a full day of hands-on building.
Participants will form cross-functional teams of junior and senior professionals, collaborating to design and build a working app on Garmin’s Connect IQ platform. No hardware required.
A Garmin mentor will be on hand throughout the day for technical questions, with a Garmin judge joining for the wrap-up, judging, and networking.
1. The past: built right for its time
Questrade has been around for 27 years, which in Canadian Fintech makes it one of the first in the game. It was one of the country’s first online brokerages, and in the early days it even ran a storefront in Toronto with high-speed computers where customers could walk in, place a trade and walk out. The original logo, Ralph reminded the room, was a muscle-bound Viking with a sword. The team is only half joking about bringing some of that energy back.
The panel was clear that the systems Questrade built along the way were the right decisions for the business Questrade was at the time. Now, they're focused on building for what Canadians need today.

2. The inflection point: from brokerage to bank
There are a few moments in Questrade’s recent history that changed their trajectory. The first took place seven years ago, when Questrade acquired Community Trust and set out on the path to becoming a Schedule 1 bank. Hwan was candid that becoming a Schedule 1 bank is the harder road. Partnering with a sponsor bank is faster and lighter on regulation. That’s the path that most Fintechs in Canada choose. But owning the full stack means Questrade can design banking and investing together as one experience instead of building inside someone else’s constraints.
Doing that meant changing how the company builds. Cue the second inflection point. Andrej leads the Experience Platform, which brings the customer-facing product under one roof while the regulated businesses behind it operate as service providers to it. Hwan described bringing product, design, and engineering much closer together, with more ownership and less hand-off. It’s this internal cultural shift that has allowed Questrade to move quicker, be more ambitious with their product builds, and prepare for their next phase of growth.
The decision to focus on building out a Calgary office, while not an inflection point, has become a big part of that story. Seven months ago, Questrade had no engineering presence here. Today it has 42 engineers in a downtown office, and the panel was clear that Calgary’s talent pool is a big reason why. Ralph summed up the approach to hiring: “You don’t know what great looks like until you’ve experienced great.”
3. The future: an operating system for personal finance
“We're building the next operating system for personal finance.”
Hwan Kim, Chief Product Officer, Questrade Financial Group
Everything Questrade has built over the last seven years points toward one goal. Hwan described it as an operating system for personal finance: one place where Canadians can bank, invest, and manage their money together, instead of spreading their financial lives across separate products and institutions. Owning the bank, the brokerage, and the customer experience is what makes that possible.
The rebrand is how Questrade is telling customers about it. Ralph explained that the new look was designed to show Canadians, on the outside, how much the company has changed on the inside. The Questrade people remember as a trading platform is becoming something much broader, and the brand needed to say so. He called the current rebrand version one, with more to come over the next year and a half.
How is Questrade using AI interally you ask? AI accelerates the work, and humans own the judgment. Work that once started with a long requirements document and months of hand-offs now moves from a short brief to working software in a fraction of the time, freeing engineers and designers to focus on polish. On design, Andrej said the internal bar is Apple, and Hwan noted that when everyone has the same tools, taste becomes the differentiator.
What makes the vision credible is that Questrade can afford to be patient. It’s profitable, self-funded, and growing, with no outside investors setting its timeline. That independence is what lets Questrade focus on their mission, and strictly their mission: help Canadians become much more financially successful and secure.
TL;DR
After 27 years in operation, Questrade is now a Schedule 1 bank, giving them control of the full stack.
Product, design and engineering now work much more closely together, and Calgary went from zero to 42 engineers in seven months.
The goal is an operating system for personal finance, bringing banking and investing together in one experience.
AI speeds up the work, humans own the taste.
Being profitable and self-funded lets Questrade play the long game against the big banks.
